Victory Over Violence

Victory Over Violence

What is Victory Over Violence?

We are so glad you asked!  Victory Over Violence, or VOV as we call it, is our 4-hour fitness marathon hosted annually by all the Ellipse Fitness locations to raise money to support local domestic violence shelters and programs to help eliminate violence and abuse.

Ellipse Fitness locations have raised over $100,000 for domestic violence shelters in the Midwest over the last 14 years.

Ellipse Fitness Milwaukee Third Ward hosted their VOV event on March 4 of this year.  Check out their before and after photos:

“Way to go Ellipse Family! We raised $3209 for Sojourner Family Peace Center A HUGE THANK YOU to all our members, friends and fellow business partners! We couldn’t have done it without you! A BIG shout out to #Ellipse3w members Meredith E. and Amanda J. for rallying the troops and raising money outside of the event’s hours! We are so grateful!” -Ashley Haag, Owner Ellipse Fitness Milwaukee Third Ward

Would you like to join the VOV movement against domestic violence at one of our locations?  Check out the dates below and consider yourself invited.

Working out for 4 hours may sound a little daunting, but we make this a party at Ellipse Fitness!  Yes, we work out, and we offer snacks and refreshments.  We, also, shop and bid on all our silent auction items.

The adrenaline rush from the generosity of our fitness family is truly the best.  All the proceeds are donated locally to help families, just like ours, during dark and scary times.  It’s okay to be safe. No one should have to live in fear of family.

Not Your Basic BBQ

At Ellipse Fitness, BBQ is not what you think. Last week, Ellipse studios took on the challenge of BBQ Week. No, this is not similar to a hamburger eating or milk chugging contest! Rather, BBQ week was filled with workouts focusing on the Biceps, the Booty, and the Quads.

In addition to intense workouts all week long that focused on moves associated with these areas of the body, the contest portion was to get members to check-in on Facebook each time they came to workout. The studio with the most check-ins at the end of BBQ week would be rewarded a new kickboxing bag for their gym. After all was said and done and the BBQ burn was real, WE HAVE A WINNER!

Dumbroll……

Congratulations to Allouez! Ellipse Fitness Allouez location took home the gold with 68 Facebook check-ins from their members! Team work makes the dream work. 🙂

Spreading Fitspiration

A heightened sense of community, sportsmanship, and inspiration is taking off throughout Ellipse locations! Striving to be the best part of your day – every day, we believe fitness should be fun! As a whole, we are dedicated to improving lives. Through challenge, reward, and education, we’re spreading the fitspiration in our studios and communities. We’re out to inspire…or rather, fitspire!

Challenge

Last Sunday, Ellipse Fitness Darboy’s Josh Mac took on the Spartan Race in Ohio to scout out the terrain. Darboy’s owner Jamie Harris and business partner Josh have big plans for their members and others in the area; And thus the TRIFECTA was born! This Fall, Darboy coaches, members, and seasonal participants will be working as a team to complete three races. The Warrior Princess Mud Run, the Battle Frog, and the Tough Mudder have been chosen for the TRIFECTA, as they make for a perfect progression of difficulty.

By participating in the Spartan Race, Josh said he was able to identify what will need to be the focus of boot camp at Darboy this Summer. Boot camp begins July 11th and will be the training program for those interested in completing the TRIFECTA. “Working as a team to accomplish the TRIFECTA will be the ultimate sense of accomplishment,” says Josh.

Reward

After reading Jon Gordon’s The Hard Hat, St. Louis studio owner Ann Morrow realized she’d seen characteristics of the protagonist in members at her own gym. In the book, the Hard Hat Award was given to the player who possessed all the qualities a good teammate should possess. Lisa Youngblood, having lost 20 pounds in about 12 weeks, is an absolute hard hat winner! “Not only is she determined to reach her goals, but she also encourages others around her verbally,” says Ann. She continues, “Due to injury, Lisa has had to modify some activity. Even so, she has never brought coaches any excuse or negativity. Rather, she asks what else she can do or what more can be done.”

Lisa’s spirit is inspiring in the gym and because of that, other’s knew the award was rightly earned. Her motivation is contagious and other members are working hard to be next Month’s Hard Hat winner. Congratulations Lisa! Your Ellipse Fitness family is very proud of you!

Education

Heather Trevarthen, owner of the Allouez location, set out to inspire the young! She visited her daughter’s 3K class and together they all headed to the gym. To grab the children’s interest, she brought toys from the studio. The kids got to stretch the mini-bands, kick the focus pads, and push around weighted medicine balls. One student even announced that his mom hits up the treadmill! 😉

In addition to having fun with the props from Ellipse, Heather had the kids stretching, planking, and doing downward dogs. They did bear crawls, frog hops, other animal flows, and ran through the ladders. Heather discussed with the children the importance of exercise. “To keep your heart healthy and your lungs strong. Our bodies were made to move!” Heather emphasized.

Please stop dieting!

Please stop dieting!

Everyone needs muscle. You need it to keep your metabolism as high as possible so you maximize fat burning.

Older folks, like our grandparents, need muscle for daily activities (from walking to gardening or even bike rides). It’s also important to be able to bend, stoop and move freely.

Young folks, like you and I, need muscle to look sexy. Because that’s what we do. We just sit around all day looking sexy, right? Tough life, I know. But hey, we’re good at it!

—Anyway, there are a few factors in avoiding muscle loss.

First, you must lift weights with the right amount of intensity and volume.

Another factor, dieting, is where most people go wrong (unless they are doing too much steady state cardio – that’s the big exercise no-no, of course).

So what’s the best diet to use?

One where you cut your calories every day? Or one that allows you to eat healthfully seven days per week?
Does the best diet demand that you eat obsessively and compulsively? Or can you just eat like a normal human being?

The good news is that you can eat normal healthy foods and just pay some extra attention to your protein intake and you can keep your metabolism rev’d up 24/7!

Questions? Give us a call or send an email – www.ellipsefitness.com. We look forward to hearing from you.

Are You Skinny-Fatter?

It’s Your Worst Nightmare!  You lose weight, look in the mirror, and see a skinny-fat version of yourself.

You look no better than when you started.  Maybe even worse. That’s because most people do things the wrong way, starving themselves daily and doing long, slow, boring cardio.

Even if those hardworking, well-meaning folks lift weights, they generally don’t do it right…using light weights that don’t send a signal to muscle that “we need you!”

So the low-calorie diet, lack of protein, and no “lift signal” to the muscles leads to a loss of muscle mass.  The loss of lean mass is the #1 factor that can slow your metabolism.

And when your metabolism slows your body stops burning fat. You plateau. And that causes you to diet harder and do more cardio and get skinny-fatter. Yes, that’s right, skinny-fatter.

It’s a terrible look and a vicious cycle.

Only by stopping muscle loss can you avoid that fate.

Everyone needs muscle. You need it to keep your metabolism as high as possible so you maximize fat burning – especially if you’re post-menopausal!

A recent study http://www.startribune.com/lifestyle/health/205701571.html  from Mayo Clinic states that increased belly fat is one of the biggest complaints of post-menopausal women, but it isn’t a definite sentence.  Women need to control their protein intake, limit eating grainy and starchy carbs and weight train to maintain muscle.
